Summary:

This position will be responsible for primarily supporting a Netezza appliance environment that will include configuration, administration and maintenance of business-critical 24x7 non-production and production environments. The position requires to be part of a team that is responsible for managing and supporting high performance, highly available and mission critical database platforms. Supports platform maintenance and operations, data ingest via NZLoad, monitors platform growth. Responsible for backup and restores for governed data.

The administrator applies a specific knowledge of system administration concepts, practices and procedures.  They are expected to work on complex assignments and perform a wide range of system administration activities with little to no direct supervision.  The administrator must be a self-starter and be able to work under aggressive deadlines.  The candidate possesses familiarity with varied concepts, standard best business practices, and procedures.  The ideal candidate can plan and execute tasks based on experience, judgment and independent research.  The candidate reports to systems manager.

The administrator has a strong understanding of troubleshooting and configuration of RHEL Linux servers, to include protocols and switching, best-practice configurations, connectivity and networking concepts. Applies specific knowledge of RHEL systems administration concepts, practices and procedures and is required to be available for on-call mission support.  They are expected to work on complex assignments and perform a wide range of RHEL system administration activities with little to no direct supervision.  The administrator must be a self-starter and be able to work under aggressive deadlines.  The candidate possesses familiarity with varied concepts, standard best business practices, and procedures.  The ideal candidate can plan and execute tasks based on experience, judgment and independent research.

Responsibilities:

  • The Netezza Database Administrator will be responsible for the design, development, installation and performance of Netezza appliances.
  • The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for all Netezza appliance support, monitoring, performance, and documentation of all Netezza databases.
  • Data management tasks including: User/Group/Permissions maintenance; Work Load Management; Database/Schema/Table design and maintenance; monitoring and performance; installs and upgrades of all related appliance software; collaboration with IBM Netezza support.
  • The Netezza DBA will support primarily a Netezza appliance environment that will include configuration, administration and maintenance of business-critical 24x7 non-production and production environments.
  • Perform database performance analysis, capacity planning, system sizing and ongoing maintenance/tuning to ensure maximum performance on Netezza systems.
  • Recommend and implement a detailed security design for the appliance to meet security and application needs.
  • Use the NzAdmin/NZMigrate tool for typical administrative tasks, including Genstats, Groom, and manage Development to Production environments
  • Perform backup and restore activities
  • Works closely with Developers, Testers, Architects, Business Analysts and other IT staff to implement Database Administration standards, policies, methods, and procedures building consensus with all parties
  • Develop and define administrative and operational standard practices using Netezza utilities (Groom, Distribution, statistics, Zone Maps).
  • Create, test, implement and monitor an automated set of procedures for database and server backups as well as necessary maintenance procedures
  • Work closely with IBM support to manage hardware/software failures, appliance upgrades and install patches
  • Manage workload via prioritization and configuration
  • Develop Big Data integration and data warehouse best practices
  • Apply best practices where possible or engineer new best practices using innovative approaches as appropriate.
  • Monitor system and application performance to detect errors; apply testing procedures/methodologies (e.g., diagnostic software) and provide interpretation of data.
  • Provide root-cause analysis for recurring or critical problems

Minimum Requirements:

  • A 4-year degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in DBA role with 2+ year experience in Netezza environment
  • 3+ years of additional experience working in data warehousing and business intelligence tools, techniques and technology is strongly desired
  • 5+ years of RHEL systems administration experience, or equivalent experience
  • Must have 5+ years of SQL programming and Performance Tuning experience
  • Strong knowledge and experience with computer hardware including Servers, Network, SAN technologies, I/O subsystems
  • Expert level experience in administering large databases in mission critical environment
  • Extensive experience with different backup/restore and disaster recovery solutions
  • Excellent knowledge of Netezza Architecture and system internals, including updates and features on new versions
  • Extensive experience with different backup/restore and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with computer hardware including Servers, Network, SAN technologies, I/O subsystems. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skill set.
  • Solid experience in Netezza system configuration and setup with its utilities and tool sets.

Education/Certification Requirement:

A 4-year degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other related scientific or technical discipline with 7-10 or more year’s related professional experience. (Education can be substituted for years of experience).

Working Hours: M-F, 8am-5pm and 24X7X365 on-call support
