Northrop Grumman Mission Systems has an opening for a Sr Principal Optical Engineerto join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Linthicum/ Baltimore, MD.

Roles & Responsibilities: Optical Engineers work with a team to support product development and Research & Development activities at our campus in Linthicum. MD. Based on detailed trade studies and requirements analysis, our engineers develop modern solutions to satisfy current system requirements as well as future challenges and perform functions involved in all aspects of design which can include:
  • Designing new models
  • Analyzing and testing optical and electro-optical systems and components, including but not limited to sensors, lasers, fiber-optics and telecommunications products.
  • Conducting and developing components into phases of physical optics and geometric optics, lasers, laser characteristics, laser maintenance, and broadband optical sources.
  • Applying research of complex optical systems to achieve desired optical manipulations.
  • Developing component specifications, tolerances, simulations and test procedures for electro-optical systems and components.
  • Using design-to-cost models, six-sigma methodology, and other methods to assure optical design requirements are met for commercial, industrial and domestic customers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Software/Systems Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math, or closely related engineering field plus 9 years (Master of Science degree plus 7 years or doctorate of philosophy degree plus 4 years) of engineering experience, which includes EO/IR experience.
  • Experience with Requirements Management, Optics, System & Subsystem Design, Integration and Test, Modeling and Simulation, Algorithm Development, Signal Processing, or Data Analysis.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Experience with designing EO/IR models and simulations
  • Technical leadership experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance or higher.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Software/Systems Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math, or related STEM discipline.
  • Experience with estimating the performance of a system.
  • Experience with Photonics or Radiometry.
  • Experience presenting to leadership audience.
  • Developing detailed simulations of a system and its environment.
  • Current, active Secret clearance, or higher.
