Digital Design Engineer / Principal Digital Design Engineer

Where will you find innovation and technology? Right here at Northrop Grumman Corporation. We are seeking a Digital Design Engineer to joinour Digital Engineering team in Buffalo, NY.

The Digital Design Engineer will design complex military electronic systems; more specifically, programmable logic design and development and packaging of electronic assemblies used to support the integration and test of radar systems. He/she will be responsible for requirements development, schematic development, FPGA (Field Programmable Gate-Array) development, product layout and design, and design verification utilizing tools such as: Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, Altera Quartus, and ModelSim.


The Engineer will support electronic circuit card design efforts. In particular, the Engineer will create circuit card schematics, programmable logic VHDL designs, engineering change orders, provide design review presentations and perform some fundamental types of analysis (e.g. power utilization, signal integrity). Other tasks may include manufacturing engineering liaison support, hardware testing, and supporting Integration and Test (I&T) operations.

*This position may be filled at a higher grade based on the qualifications listed below.

This requisition may be filled as either a Digital Design Engineer or a Principal Digital Design Engineerbased on the qualifications below.

Basic Qualifications for a Digital Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline, plus 2 years of relevant technical/engineering experience; or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline plus 0 years of experience.
  • Experience with Schematic and FPGA tools, such as Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, ModelSim, and Altera Quartus, etc.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to apply and/or develop technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts.
  • Ability to change physical locations based upon need (including physical ability to travel). Typically low percentage of travel may be required 10 20% annually.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline, plus 5 years of relevant technical/engineering experience; or a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline plus 3 years of relevant technical/engineering experience.
  • Experience with Schematic and FPGA tools, such as Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, ModelSim, and Altera Quartus, etc.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to apply and/or develop technologies, scientific principles, theories and concepts.
  • Ability to change physical locations based upon need (including physical ability to travel). Typically low percentage of travel may be required 10 20% annually.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.


Preferred Qualifications for Both Levels:

  • Experience designing Electronic Circuit Card Assemblies.
  • Knowledge of printed wiring board fabrication, component assembly, wiring and soldering, inspection and test.
  • Experience with Electronic Design Software - DxDesigner, Quartus, Modelsim
  • Experience in a Department of Defense (DoD) environment.
