Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems has an opening for an Aircraft Structural Vulnerability Engineerto join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Melbourne, Florida.

The successful candidate will be a Specialty Engineer performing stress analysis to quantify the effects and consequences of both combat and non-combat damage on military aircraft. The analysis will include modeling and analyzing the performance of damaged structure. This position supports the creation of probabilistic hostile weapon effects using sophisticated computer tools, determining how predicted effects impact system capabilities, and providing design solutions to improve survivability.

The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of aircraft structure with a specific emphasis on degraded strength due to damage. Specific problems of interest include LS-DYNA dynamic modeling of hydrodynamic ram and overpressure events and creating and analyzing damaged vehicle FEMs based on LS-DYNA analysis and testing using FEMAP/NASTRAN. The position involves close coordination with aircraft structural engineers and stress analysts to minimize the risk of aircraft kill from hostile and non-combat threats.


Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 2+ years of software engineering experience OR- Master's Degree in STEM and 0 years of experience

  • Must have an Active In-scope DoD Secret SecurityClearance that has been granted / renewed within the past 5 years

  • The ability to obtain and maintain specific program access

  • Coursework and/or work experience using computer aided design tools.

  • Ability to develop technical solutions to complex problems and work with appropriate levels of supervision and oversight from senior engineers.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Coursework and/or work experience in dynamic event failure modeling (LS-DYNA preferred).
  • Coursework and/or work experience related to structural testing.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEMAP/NASTRAN preferred).
  • Experience working with design engineers to generate creative design solutions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong interest in the Defense Industry and Military Aircraft Technology.
  • Proficiency with a command line environment and scripting (Python preferred).
