Engineer EHS/Principal Engineer EHS

Northrop Grumman Missions Systems sector is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer/Scientist to support health and safety, hazardous waste management, environmental compliance, and due diligence programs. This position will be located in Sunnyvale, CA.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Manages wastes (hazardous and non-hazardous) and associated shipping documentation. Coordinates timely shipmentsand deliveries of waste containers.

  • Provides oversight of waste collection and packaging and waste water and ground water treatment operations.

  • Regulatory reporting, including Monthly Waste Water and Ground Water, Biennial Report, Toxic Release Inventory Form R, Waste Minimization SB14, Refrigerant Management Plan, Hazardous Waste Generator Fee, Tiered Permit, etc.

  • Maintains and updates waste characterizations and profiles.

  • Reviews and interprets existing and proposed EHS regulations to determine applicability and impact businessoperations. Assists with implementation of programs to comply.

  • Partners with the Environmental Health Safety and Fire Protection, Medical, Mission Assurance, IT, Facilities, Operations, and Engineering to continuously improve the culture, awareness and accountability in support of EHS programs.

  • Manages due diligence activities, internal auditing of programs

  • Oversees the activities of third party consultants and contractors. Provides escort, as needed.

  • Conducts EHS training, such as contractor safety, hazard communication, new employee orientation, etc.

  • Performs PPE assessments/job safety assessments, assists with industrial hygiene monitoring, conducts incidentinvestigations and provides assistance with identifying possible preventative and/or corrective actions.

  • Implements EHS management systems programs and associated documentation.

Additional roles and responsibilities may include:

  • Serves as liaison with regulatory agencies.

  • Provides timely and accurate submission of necessary reports to the company and regulatory agencies.

  • Writes and updates EHS plans and procedures.

  • Applies for new permits and renewals.

  • Conducts periodic audits and identifies actions necessary to meet regulatory requirements.

  • Coordinates EHS training for employees and conducts instructor-led EHS training.

  • Supports the sector's environmental sustainability program.

  • Supports site remediation and abatement activities

  • Supports regulatory inspections and implements the appropriate corrective actions

  • Maintains injury database for trend evaluation and produces charts for weekly and/or monthly review

This requisition may be filled at either the engineer or principal engineer level based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications for an Environmental Health and Safety Engineer/Scientist are:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in science, or related field and a minimum of 2+ years of experience in an EHS position.

  • Experience with one of the following: 1) managing various environmental health and safety compliance programs (such as incident review/evaluations, confined space entry, contractor safety, respiratory protection, hearing protection, hazardous waste, storm water, wastewater, air, etc.) based on the review and interpretation of EHS regulations; 2) oversight of third party consultants/contractors; and/or 3) implementation of EHS management systems (e.g. ISO 14001).

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with all levels of an organization are a must.

  • Ability to solve complex problems by: actively seeking information and new ideas from a variety of sources; consistently looking for novel ways to solve problems; mastering unfamiliar information, tasks and situations quickly and effectively.

  • Computer based skills specifically with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point programs.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in science, or related field and a minimum of 5+ years of experience in an EHS position.

  • Experience with one of the following: 1) managing various environmental health and safety compliance programs (such as incident review/evaluations, confined space entry, contractor safety, respiratory protection, hearing protection, hazardous waste, storm water, wastewater, air, etc.) based on the review and interpretation of EHS regulations;2) oversight of third party consultants/contractors; and/or 3) implementation of EHS management systems (e.g. ISO 14001).

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with all levels of an organization are a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these qualifications will be given preferential consideration:

  • Master of Science (MS) degree in environmental, health, or safety program of study, or currently enrolled in an M.S. degree program.

  • Certifications in environmental or health & safety related programs.

  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint and Access programs.
