Job Description


Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions. Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup; uses a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds; measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining; fits and assembles precision parts into mechanical equipment and determines material, parts, and equipment required. Some machines may be numerically controlled. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. Typically requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.


Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)and at least4 years of experience as a machinist.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience in machining.
  • Experience using a Bridgeport or similar machine
  • Ability to obtain a Secret DoDSecurity clearance with ability to maintain
  • Must be able and willing to work with structure mechanics when not machining
  • Must be able to perform a variety of operations and become part of a small team of mechanics with supervision as determined by the team lead
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for short periods of time
  • Ability to be subject to areas which could cause various phobias due to height or closed spaces
  • Able to wear respirator or other safety gear
  • Ability to be subject to both external and internal environmental conditions.
  • Ability to be subject to a variety of physical conditions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in performing aircraft field structure modifications
  • Experience with working aircraft structures.
