Ultrasonic Testing Engineer

ENSCO, Inc. is seeking an Ultrasonic Testing Engineer with demonstrated Ultrasonic Rail Testing experience to conduct railroad track inspection operations involving the use of measurement tools and systems, electronics troubleshooting and computer operation. Level II (two) certification in Ultrasonic Rail Flaw inspection technology required with more than 2-years of experience operating ultrasonic rail flaw inspection systems on rail vehicles

This position involves:
  • Conducting rail flaw inspections on a hi-rail inspection vehicle all over the United States;
  • Reporting findings and documenting inspection records;
  • Training technicians on principles, techniques, and best practices for interpretation of rail flaw indications;
  • Performing system calibrations, set-up, manual confirming inspections on rail bound automated inspection systems;
  • Providing input for development of standard practices with focus on quality results;
  • Collaboration with systems Engineers and managers;
  • Occasionally testing and debugging software;
  • System and vehicle periodic, preventive, and remedial inspections and maintenance;
  • Some housekeeping duties for workplace safety and sanitation purposes aboard survey vehicles;
  • Travel on a standard 3-week assignment, normally earning more than 40-hour work week schedule.

This position is based at ENSCO s customer site (survey vehicle) and requires the incumbent to routinely be dispatched to survey vehicles throughout the U.S. and maintain professional appearance and demeanor as a representative of ENSCO, a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) contractor.

The permanent site is in PA, but due to extensive travel, the ideal candidate could be located anywhere in the continental US.

Qualifications Desired
Level III (three) certification in Ultrasonic inspection technology
Experience with quality management/assurance program
Hydraulics maintenance/troubleshooting
Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Pneumatic brake systems
Soldering and cable assembly
Welding & fabrication
Diesel engine mechanics
CPR/First Aid certifications
Familiarity with 49 CFR parts 229 and 238
Valid Commercial Driver's License, CDL Class B or greater

Qualifications Required (Skills)
Level II (two) certification in Ultrasonic Rail Flaw inspection technology (UT/NDT) and more than 2-years experience operating ultrasonic rail flaw inspection systems on rail vehicles with strong knowledge on theory of operation and interpretation of A and B-scan data to identify rail flaws.
  • Ability to train team members on Ultrasonic inspection technology
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Railroad environment/industry experience
  • Experience reading electrical or electronic schematics and wiring diagrams
  • Experience conducting equipment/machinery inspections (periodic maintenance inspections, preventive maintenance) and equipment upkeep
  • Familiarity with 49 CFR parts 213 and 214
  • Experience with workplace safety programs
  • Proficiency with tape measure and similar measuring tools
  • Functional knowledge of mathematics and fraction measurements
  • Proficiency with computer applications such as MS Word; Excel; PowerPoint; and Outlook
  • Aptitude for proficiency with software applications aboard track measurement survey vehicles, including ENSCO s proprietary applications
  • Experience in testing and debugging equipment
  • Experience in performing NDT systems calibrations
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows Operating System; transferring files on a network, copying, and pasting
  • Valid Driver s License

Physical Requirements
  • Lift and carry 50 lbs. a distance of at least 150 feet
  • Climb a ladder 15 feet high to access roof spaces of survey vehicles
  • Work in close quarters, under and about survey vehicles
  • Work in inclement weather
  • Work 12-hours or longer

Perform as safety watchman in railroad environment.
Passing a Federal pre-employment drug test is a requirement prior to performing duties in this position. Undergoing and passing random drug and alcohol testing is a condition while performing duties of this position.

Railroad regulations require that selected candidates must pass an e-RAILSAFE security background check, including financial status, and online safety exams in order to work on railroad properties (a requirement of this position).

The selected candidate will be required to submit to fingerprint and additional background investigations in connection with this position.

Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (hard hat, steel-toe boots, protective vest and protective eye glasses) when working on railroad properties is also a requirement. ENSCO will provide all necessary safety equipment.
