Defense jobs coming to South Carolina business park

South Carolina is poised to add new intelligence and defense jobs

An $18 million expansion to Remount Business Park in North Charleston, South Carolina, is expected to be completed this summer and will include the addition of hundreds of defense jobs, the Post and Courier reports.

Defense giant Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) has said that it plans to occupy approximately 43,000 square feet of one of the new buildings set to open at the business park, which is near the Naval Weapons Station.

The business park's renovation project require the site to attract at least 600 new positions, many of which are likely to be defense and intelligence jobs based on the park's prime location near the Weapons Station.

Jim Thigpen, SAIC's senior vice president, said that the company is planning to re-locate 240 of its employees in defense jobs to the new facility, according to the news source.

The main client for SAIC is the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SPAWAR), which develops communication technology for members of the armed forces.

Many intelligence and defense jobs require employees to have security clearance, which entails undergoing a lifestyle polygraph and a number of other steps in order to be granted access to top secret information.
